How to restore a Windows Vista / 7 / 2008 / 2008 R2 image(s) using the Symantec Recovery Disk (SRD).
When Windows Vista/7/2008 is installed onto a blank, raw hard drive, 2 partition are typically created: a 100Mb hidden partition marked as System Reserved, and the visible operating system partition, typically given the drive letter C:\. The System Reserved contains vital information necessary to a succesful boot up into Windows. If this partition does not exist, Windows was likely installed onto a drive with an existing partition and the files (see below) were installed directly onto the operating system partition.

To determine if your operating system has a System Reserved partition, open Disk Management (click start, type diskmgmt.msc in the search box, and hit enter). The system reserved partition will look something like this:
When creating backups with Symantec SSR / BESR, if a System Reserved exists, it must be backed up with the Operating System partition. If a System Reserved is detected during a backup job creation, you will prompted to include it in the backup. If it exists, include it in the backup! It must be restored along with the operating sytem partition using the instructions below, or it will result in a non-bootable system after a restore. If this happens and you don't have access to system reserved partition, refer to:
To prepare the system for restoration:
- Boot the system from the Symantec Recovery Disk (SRD).
Note: Steps 1-9 will remove all data on the target disk in order to prepare it for the restore.
- From the SRD, select the Analyze tab
- Select Open Command Shell Window.
- From the command prompt, type Diskpart. This will display the Diskpart shell prompt. (e.g, D:\DISKPART>)
- Type List Disk, and press Enter. This will display all disks in the system as seen by the SRD. For this technote, we will be using Disk 0 as an example. (Note: if a disk in the machine is not listed or listed incorrectly, the disk controller driver may not be loaded. If this is the case, go back to the main menu and use the load driver option to load drivers. Drivers must be 32-bit Vista or Windows 2008 in the SRD for BESR 2010 and SSR 2011).
- Type Select Disk 0, and press Enter. (replace disk 0 with the disk number you are restoring to.) The message Disk 0 is now the selected disk will display
- Type Clean All, and press Enter. Each and every sector will now be zeroed, and all data that is contained on the drive will be deleted. A blinking cursor will appear until the operation is complete. Depending on the size of the drive, this could take several minutes.
- The message DiskPart succeeded in cleaning the disk will display. Type Exit, and press Enter.
- The disk is now ready for BESR / SSR to restore the image file(s) to. Please select the restore option below to begin this process:
Restoring a Windows Vista / Windows 7 / 2008 / 2008 R2 system:
- From the Welcome screen, select the Recover tab to launch the Recover My Computer wizard.
- Select the Recovery Point type System
- Browse to and select the .sv2i file and click Open.
- Click Next.
- The Symantec Recovery Disk will detect the un-initialized disk. Select the drive and click OK to initialize the disk.
- Click Yes to proceed with the initialization of the disk.
- Once initialization has completed, the Drives to Recover page will appear. (if the Edit Target Drives and Options box appears, click cancel to get back to the Drives to Recover).
- Select the System Reserved partition (typically 100mb). Do not select any other partitions.
**If a System Reserved partition does not exist in the list, select the operating system partition to recover
- Click Edit.
- Choose the following options:
- Set Drive Active
- Restore Master Boot Record
- Click OK to return to the previous screen.
- If restoring the System Reserved partition, Use Restore Anyware should not checked. If restoring the Operating System partition, Use Restore Anyware should be checked. The option Verify recovery point before recovery checks the image file before the restore. This is optional and should be used if you suspect image file corruption. This addition check will increase the total restore time.
- Click Next.
- If restoring the System Reserved partition, ensure Reboot when Finished is not selected. If restoring the Operating System partition, ensure Reboot when Finished
Check the details on the screen.
- Click Finish to begin the restore. When prompted, select Yes to start the recovery.
- When the restore is complete:
> If the System Reserved partition was restored, proceed with the following steps to restore the Operating System partition.
>If the Operating System partition was restored, the system will reboot. Proceed with the following steps only if there are additional partitions to restore.
- Click Close when the recovery is complete.The SRD Main Menu will appear
- Click the Recover tab and select Recover My Computer.
- Select the Recovery Point type Filename.
- Browse to and select the .v2i file.
- The Drives to Recover page will appear.
- Select the Operating System partition from the list. Do not select any other partitions.
- Click Edit. Ensure that the partition to be restore and how it is going to be restored is highlighted in blue. This is the target destination.
- If you would like the restored partititon to be the same size as it was on the souce, proceed to step 25. If you would like the partition to be resized to fill the contents of the unused space on the drive, verify that the target destination is highlighted then click Delete Drive. The target destination withh will change to unallocated space. Highlight the unallocated space. This is the new target destination.
- To resize, click Resize drive after recovery.
- The default Size value is the max amount of unallocated space. Adjust size accordingly if desired.
- Choose only the following options:
- Restore Original Disk Signature
- Click OK to return to the previous screen.
- If restoring to dissimilar hardware (e.g., a different machine), select the option Use Restore Anyware. A hard drive replacement does not require this option.
- Select the check box Reboot When Finished.
- Select Finish.
- When the restore is done, boot up should proceed normally. The boot up time may take a few minutes or a few hours, depending on the plug and play process. Do not interupt this boot-up process.
- If restoring to ESX 3.5, you may be prompted for a driver for the Network Interface Card. This driver can be found on the Host machine in this location: /vmimages/tools-isoimages/windows.iso
